Professional and Linguistics Assessments Board (PLAB) Examinations


The Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam is a requirement for international medical graduates who wish to practice medicine in the United Kingdom. It ensures that doctors trained outside the UK, EEA, or Switzerland have the knowledge and skills equivalent to a UK Foundation Year 2 (F2) doctor.

PLAB Exam Guide
The PLAB exam is divided into two parts. PLAB 1 is a written exam consisting of 180 single best answer (SBA) questions completed over 3 hours. It assesses your understanding of common and important medical conditions typically encountered by a UK Foundation Year 2 doctor, with a focus on diagnosis, management, and clinical reasoning.​

PLAB 2 is a practical, in-person exam known as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). It includes 18 stations, each lasting 8 minutes, and is conducted only in Manchester, UK. This part evaluates your ability to apply clinical knowledge in real-life scenarios, emphasizing communication skills, practical procedures, and professionalism in patient care.

The General Medical Council is the regulatory body for doctor's licensing in the UK. After completing PLAB, one may register for a license to practice with GMC.
